Typical flybys take place shortly after sunset, with the pair first appearing in the northwest (look for the Big Dipper) and soaring overhead from there. The space shuttle appears first, followed by the ISS. Both spacecraft are bright and easy to see with the naked eye. Robertson Snip Before it even gets underway, human Mars exploration is headed for a political trainwreck . The likelihood of trouble is so great that advocates for human exploration of the Solar System probably should look elsewhere -- toward a return to Earth's moon or asteroid mining expeditions. Building the Space Station represents a unique point in human history. Even as it is finally getting started, few people - supporters and opponents alike - realize just how big and potentially important the project really is, or how difficult building it will be. Learning to assemble large and complex structures in the microgravity of space is fully comparable to humanity's invention of large-scale construction in stone. In building the Space Station, humanity is learning nothing less than how to build permanent structures in the microgravity environment that dominates the Universe. Our street light were no help but the craft were both bright specks in the sky as they flew over. Only took a few minutes. The Moon and Venus were bright in the sky as well. Was nice meeting some of the neighbor's kids out with their parents. Handed out printouts made from Heavens-Above charts and visible pass times for our location. Current observing site: *Tracy, 37.740?N, 121.424?W* http://www.heavens-above.com/ Was fun explaining about the Moon moving to the East each night as it orbits Earth and watching it set to the West as the Earth turned and looking at the different ISS tracks as we rotated under the its 92 minute orbit.
